Forgetting Is Part Of The Journey
by Ann Holdreith

Long ago I fell from the sky. When I touched the earth I forgot that I was everything. But in this hour of infinite light radiance whispers inside me.

When we look into a baby’s eyes we see light. The God essence is still pure and transparent. You may have also experienced this same light in an elderly person ready to make their transition. The veil of separation becomes thin as they move into their soul’s essence. If this is what is apparent in the beginning and end, what is everything in between?

Everything in-between is the journey home. It is an opportunity to learn our soul lessons, to embrace being human, to release patterns and limitations we have taken on and return to wholeness. How does light know what light is unless it has experienced darkness. By incarnating and taking on the human experience, we embrace duality. We forget the power of the God within us, because we judge ourselves as not enough. Every human seems to go through this conundrum. Even enlightened masters experience their moments of self-doubt.

We create at a soul level our own unique circumstances that allow us to grow in ways our soul wants us to grow. In the everything in-between we call life, we often forget our radiance. We get caught in the circumstances of being human. This is OK because it is part of the journey that leads to a deeper level of love. The soul’s willingness to experience all that is not light begets a love deepened by compassion.

To journey to our divine self we must go deep into the personal self. On this journey we may experience a dark night of the soul in which we feel a sense of deadness and confusion. It is helpful to recognize periods of deadness in our lives for what they really are: a letting go of patterns, beliefs and stuck energy that no longer support us. Outdated aspects of our self are dying, but the next level has not yet arrived. We are in the in-between. In such periods, it is helpful to allow ourselves to be empty, so we can be filled. Letting go of the old and living in emptiness with trust allows the new to take form. When the disruption in our life is exaggerated, we may be embarking upon a complete re-organization of our patterning. To meet the self, we have to be willing to travel through the desert. The desert may take many forms depending on what lessons we are choosing at the soul level. The native Americans refer to it as a vision quest. It is a journey away from what is predictable and familiar, a journey away from our tribe or clan. By placing ourselves in circumstances that separate us from our normal routines and belief systems, we have the opportunity to break old patterns. When we leave what is familiar, we allow new information and energy to emerge from within. The less of the conditioned we have to rely on, the more we are forced to go within to gain our knowledge. The willingness to move through our fear begins to disconnect us from our outer programming and thus return us to our individual journey. Being willing to go deep into our personal journey eventually merges us with the outer world from a more spiritually mature state.

When our personal journey is accompanied by great disruption and confusion, it is probably our soul’s choice to begin to undo our belief in the linear world and claim the journey into the realm of the mystical. We are choosing to begin the process of transformation and transcending. Sometimes it appears that the changes and upheaval have chosen us, but at some level we are creating it. We create everything in our lives. When we take responsibility for ourselves as creators, we tap into the power of co-creation with God. All that is necessary to begin the journey is our pure intention to meet the self and a willingness to be open to what this draws to us. The journey is ever evolving with many layers and levels. It is a process of surrender to our self, to life and to God.

Being willing to live spontaneously and embrace the unknown helps to reveal our personal journey. It allows us to discover what is real and meaningful for us at a soul level. We can begin to do this in simple ways by following what we are drawn to and not letting fear over ride our intuition and passion. We can explore through workshops, therapy, spiritual practice, meditation, new forms of creative expression, travel or new friends. Anything we are drawn to that takes us away from the familiar and allow us to expand will move us towards our authentic Self. Any way that we question the beliefs that say we are not enough or we can’t do what we love will bring us into alignment with our authenticity. We start by giving ourselves permission to express authentically. We always proceed at the pace we are ready for. When we are ready to face our deep fears, we begin to live the Divine life. We begin to flow with feelings, events and circumstances because we know they are part of a higher order. Through surrender, we trust our selves and the flow of grace that supports us in becoming the power of our divine and authentic self.

What Isn’t Real: A Meditation

Prepare a time where you can relax without disturbances. Have a notebook and pen nearby. Sit with your back straight. Relax your arms and legs. Let them be uncrossed.

• Begin to breathe deeply through your nose into your belly below your navel. Consciously release any tension from your body.

• Breathe into your heart.

• Ask your deep self to bring you guidance. There is a part of us that knows what we need at a deep level. This is our God self. Trust this part of you.

• Breathe brilliant light into your heart. Let it illuminate any shadows covering your true self.

• Ask your deep self: “What barrier have I built around my vulnerability? How have I kept my true Self hidden?”

• Accept whatever comes to you. Don’t try to intellectualize or understand it at this point. Trust your intuition.

• Let feelings, images and words come to you.

• Ask you deep self, “What is the gift that will heal my barriers?”

• Accept the words, feelings and images that come. Spend as much time with this process as you need.

At the close of your process, feel your heart bathed in brilliant light and love. Feel your whole body bathed in brilliant light and love. Breathe the healing images, feelings or words you received into your whole body. See your true self come forth in freedom to give its gifts to the world. Give thanks for your guidance and gifts. Amen.
