You can find out a lot about life and
walking the path of spiritual development and self awareness when you
move. The actual moving of physical belongings from one space to another
is cathartic in and of itself. You find yourself pitching stuff that no
longer fits where you are and who you have become. And you also find
yourself walking down memory lane with other things you may have long
forgotten you had.
Comedian George Carlin once did a classic
bit about “stuff.” He joked about how we gather and accumulate stuff,
then buy plastic bins to put all our stuff into until eventually,
because we have so much stuff, we have to move into a bigger place to
hold all it all! We laughed loud and strong because all of us could
identify with it. We all hold on to too much stuff!
Besides making us aware of all the things
we have accumulated thus far in our lives, moving can also be a very
powerful spiritual experience. Excitement, anxiety, anticipation,
exuberance, fearfulness… the whole gamut of emotions will be brought up
when you go through a move.
I approached my recent move with an air of
excitement and anticipation. I didn’t mind gleaning through my stuff,
trimming out what was no longer in resonance with me.
The interesting thing is that you realize
how much you have grown since you last cleaned out your closets and
purged.
Now, this girl just LOVES to read so I
have saved and gathered lots of books, magazines, articles and printed
things that all needed weeding through. I gleefully took on the task of
attacking those huge stacks of old magazines and papers. It became like
a game to me, a treasure hunt, to find the gems buried in the piles. So
I dug in. I hardly paid attention to People, Us or volumes of travel
magazines that I dropped into huge black plastic bags. I did find
myself, however, leafing through and even stopping to read from my
stacks of body, mind, spirit type magazines.
Down memory lane I went, tripping through
volumes of New Age Journal, Magical Blend, Psychic Guide, Vegetarian
Times, Yoga Journal and other old texts, yellowed from age. Then one
stood out among the rest… the well-worn edition of New Realities
magazine from 1977. On the cover was a painting of a bright yellow
sphere suspended above blue and purple swatches with the words, “You are
entitled to miracles,” running across the image.
I recalled back to when I first saw that
cover. Those words resonated so deeply within me that they inspired me
to continue my spiritual quest. I ordered a copy of the poster and had
it framed. It was something I looked at every day on the wall of my
first office. You could say that this one image was instrumental in
starting me on the path of what would become my continual spiritual
journey which would lead me to my future destiny… phenomeNEWS.
As I held that magazine cover to my heart,
I closed my eyes and felt all the power it had once stirred inside me.
This one phrase was the conduit to my deeper connection with Source. The
painting on the cover, by the way, was done by Jean Shinoda Bolen who,
back then, was the wife of the editor of the magazine, Jim Bolen. Years
later, when we had the opportunity to interview Dr. Bolen, I told her of
my resonance with the message in her painting. We had come full circle.
It never ceases to amaze me how many ways
we are reminded and offered opportunities to re-connect with our Source.
Sometimes it may be in gentle nudges, like words on a bumper sticker or
a certain phrase in an email or even a song whose lyrics touch that
special sacred place inside. Other times, it comes like a crack of
lightning, perhaps taking someone close to us from this lifetime which
causes us to reflect on what is really, really important and how we can
get back “in touch.”
However it comes and whatever the package
looks like, pay attention. You are being called to re-join the group.
You are remembering the essence of who you really are. You are receiving
a call from Home.
