Lately, I’ve been witnessing a
restlessness running through the crowd. Some are saying they are no
longer content with the way things are. Some are dropping “comfortable”
lives and striking out on brave new adventures. Others have moved to new
towns in different states where they didn’t know a single soul. People
are restless and yearning for something else. What’s going on?
I feel the underlying cause may not be
just the need for change. The restless, untamed spirit is being awakened
in us, making us feel the burning desire to express ourselves. Our souls
are yearning for creative expression of some sort. Writing, painting,
drawing, playing music, cooking, going back to school... there seems to
be a need to expand, to become more than we were the moment before.
This is opening new vistas for many to
explore. Did you know there was such as thing as “recreational” music?
There is even a magazine created for people who like to pick up an
instrument or go to their piano and play just for the pure pleasure of
it. They don’t expect to be performing at Carnegie Hall or with the New
York Philharmonic. These folks are just wanting to let their creativity
flow out in some way that pleases them.
Such was the case of Gabriela Montero.
Gabriela was born in Venezuela and began to show her natural gift for
improvisation on the piano at the tender age of one – yes, I said one.
Imagine, at one year old being drawn to the piano to play the rhythm
that’s inside your heart. Her parents recognized that she had talent but
didn’t quite know how to develop it. However, that didn’t stop Gabriela.
She kept playing just for the pure pleasure of it and it didn’t go
unnoticed. Soon teachers showed up who were willing to help her develop
her talent. Today, at 34 years old, seeing her play is like watching a
great master create a masterpiece. She closes her eyes and “feels” the
flow of the music as her fingers dance over the keyboard to the rhythms
coming from her soul. How does she create such wonderful sounds? She
says, “I just look at four or five bars of a theme and then play it back
on the piano. It just happens. I hear the theme in my head and then this
whole piece is constructed around it. There’s no formula and no process
that I can really describe because it’s all completely spontaneous.”
It’s all completely spontaneous. When
was the last time you were completely spontaneous? And can you recall
what emerged from that spontaneity?
I believe there are energetic doorways
opening in each of us to encourage, even beckon, us to our grander
selves. What is it inside you that is burning to come forth? If you are
not sure, just think about what you do for fun. What consumes your mind
and makes your heart sing. What makes you feel creative? I’ll bet once
you begin thinking, you can pull up quite a few things that have laid
dormant for a while and are ready and waiting for you.
The interesting thing about this is
once you begin “allowing” yourself to really get into whatever you
enjoy, to allow your creative side to express itself, you will find
other areas opening up for you as well. You will experience more bounce
in your step; you will probably sleep more soundly and your health will
definitely improve. Don’t be surprised to find that all your
relationships, both personal and professional, will also improve. This
happens because you are honoring and loving who you really are by
allowing that joyful self expression into the outer physical world. Once
this beautiful genie gets let out of the bottle, a whole wonderful new
world opens up for you.
I invite you to take some time this month to explore the many beautiful
facets of the gem you truly are. All of your “muses” are lined up just
ready to assist you in bringing forth your innate flow of creativity.
The portals are open... are you ready
to walk through?
I’ve also observed that the more chaos
is happening outside of us, the stronger the urge to get away, go
somewhere else. The best place to go is not a geographical location. It
is where it’s always been… that sanctuary inside. The wonderful peaceful
silence that invites us in, waiting ever so patiently, for us to decide
when we’ve had enough of the chaos of the outside world. This sanctuary
is not only our safe place, it is the only place where we can receive
the guidance and clarity on the what, when, where and how of our lives.
It alone is the answer.
So, on this most auspicious time in our
planet’s evolution, let’s consider taking up the sacred quest of
honoring and loving ourselves enough to re-discover that sanctuary
within because therein lies the most magnificent unconditional love you
will ever experience. It is then that we will have received the most
awesome gift to share with the world. This will be the global warming
that is truly meaningful.
