Egyptian proverb |
Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you were indecisive
and didn’t know what you needed to do?
This is a segment in one
man’s journey... to his enlightenment.
The other day while in
Windsor Canada I wandered into a familiar store that I have been to
several times before. This was the third re-location for the charming
place known as Scratching the Surface. The owner Gregory was behind the
counter. I told him how much I love this location and how he seems to
have such a knack for decorating by placing things in just the right
areas.
Greg began telling me
about synchronicities and different situations in his life that have
been transforming. He told me about a friend who had come to visit from
out west. While driving around Greg began telling him that they would be
going here and there, doing this and that all around town. Greg had
pre-planned so many things that his frustrated friend finally blurted
out, “Is it always about you?”
Greg teasingly responded,
“Yes, it is always all about me and when you realize that, things will
go easier.”
Another time Greg and a
different friend went on a buying trip to a gift show in Toronto. While
at the show, Greg spotted a sign on the wall proclaiming, “It’s all
about me!” He recognized the synchronicity right away.
On the way back home,
Greg’s friend mentioned the sign on the wall then opened a bag and took
out a promotional item from the show. It was a black vinyl bag with hot
pink letters spelling out, “It’s all about me.” His friend had bought it
as a gift for Greg. Greg was ecstatic! They both had a good laugh over
it. This phrase seemed to be showing up everywhere and Greg knew he
needed to pay attention to the deeper message contained within the
words.
A few weeks later, Greg
was at a reunion of people he used to meditate regularly with. He hadn’t
seen them in a couple of years. He didn’t seem to vibe with them any
more. He didn’t feel like, from his perspective, that they were walking
their talk. A woman friend came up to him and commented that he didn’t
seem like himself. He told me that was when he began to realize a deep
spiritual truth. Greg realized that he needed to look within at his own
wounds instead of finding fault in others. He was beginning to discover
more about himself.

The next day, he was
scheduled to give a talk. The topic was “It’s All About Me,” but he felt
he was at a loss for words because his store was going to be closing
down and he had no enthusiasm for this talk. He really loved the store
and was sad about losing it.
That day, Greg walked into
the room to find twenty-six people waiting to hear his talk. He spoke
honestly as he proceeded to tell them about losing the store. A gasp
filled the room. Everyone loved the store and all it had to offer. Greg
related how he felt the store was just an extension of who he was. So if
the store was limited, then he was limited. Greg told them that the way
they could help him was to own where they limit themselves and in so
doing, they would be shifting the energy for themselves and others. This
would create a ripple effect and, since we are all one, this ripple
effect would help him as well as everyone else shift. Greg had talked to
them about being real and honoring and believing in themselves in
whatever they did in life.
This moment was a profound
awakening for Greg and all the others. At the end, they gathered
together in a circle holding hands. Greg told them to look at each
other, make eye contact and send each other support in releasing any
limitations they had. Emotions filled the room. As they did this, Greg
played a song by Amanda Marshall titled, “I Believe In You.”
Somewhere there’s a
river
looking for a stream
Somewhere there’s a dreamer
looking for a dream
Somewhere there’s a drifter
trying to find his way
Somewhere someone’s waiting
To hear somebody say
I believe in you
I can’t even count the ways that
I believe in you
And all I want to do is help you to
Believe in you!
All of this brought Greg
to the realization that it really is about you! It’s about each of us,
not in a selfish way but in honoring and believing in ourselves.
My friend Abraham states,
“If they’ve found a philosophy that works for them, let them live their
philosophy while you live what’s working for you... You’ll bring
yourself grief as you try to convince anybody that your plan is better..
Your plan is better for you; their plan is better for them.”
You
gotta make your own
kind of music
Sing your own special song
Make your own kind of music
Even if nobody else sings along
