A Course In Miracles

Years ago, perhaps in the 1980s, I was attending a lecture given by Jackie Kendall, a well known psychic in the Detroit area. She asked the group, “How many of you believe you have a soul?” Most of the hands went up. She then stated: “Well, you are wrong. You are a soul and you have a body.”

What if in reality we are all powerful, spiritual beings having a human experience on the earth? What if we are really spiritual actors who are participating in this earth experience and interacting with each other as part of a Divine Plan? Imagine that nothing that we see or experience is real because everything around us is changeable. In other words everything is an illusion. Illusions change from time to time. Only that which is real never changes. The spiritual self, an essence of love is all that is real in this scenario.

Now, if you will, take this a step further and imagine that each of us has an assignment, a contract, to play a particular role for our learning and for the learning of others. Dr Caroline Myss, PhD discusses this concept in her book, Sacred Contracts. What if we at the soul level have agreed to participate in this capacity, even though we have no memory of having chosen this role? We are in this scenario to learn and grow. In such a world, the people who treated us so harshly were just playing a part. They were catalysts to propel us to new levels of understanding.

Wouldn’t looking at the world through this lens make forgiveness much easier? There would be nothing to forgive, because in reality, their actions had no effect. The real spiritual self was always safe. A Course In Miracles says “Your reality is only spirit.” Perhaps the greatest example of this was the crucifixion and the resurrection which demonstrated that there is no death. The spiritual self or soul, cannot be destroyed.

For many of us describing our material world as an illusion is confusing. It certainly seems real enough. We can see, hear and touch the things around us. Yet if we look at these solid objects under a microscope we see that they are not solid at all, but are composed of cells and particles of moving energy with space between the cells. The density and solid appearance is an illusion. As Dr. Wayne Dyer says, “A closer look at the physical world reveals a dance of particles in endless voids of empty space.”

Illusions also take the form of pain, illness, lack, separation, commonly held beliefs and fears of all kinds. They exist because of our common held beliefs that they are real. In this sense, illusion is anything that we feel has power over us. Arnold Patent poses the question, “How then do we master the world of illusion? Illusions continue to exist because people put energy into them. Inflation is kept alive because we think about it continually. So much energy is put into it, that it must expand. If the word were removed from the language, and no one talked about it or wrote about it, it would disappear. That is true of any illusion. When energy is taken away from an illusion, it disintegrates.”

People once believed that the earth was flat. That was an illusion. Is it possible that some of the beliefs of the mass consciousness now are as inaccurate as the belief that the earth is flat? As long as we believe in scarcity, that we are victims or the inability of the body to heal itself, that will be our reality. When we unplug from widely held but limiting beliefs, we open ourselves to new, higher experiences. Part of growing up is the process of questioning the beliefs that were instilled in us and rejecting that which doesn’t fit for us anymore.
